Among all the natural disasters people face, wildfires are unique. Unlike hurricanes, people can fight them. Unlike tornados, people can contain them. Unlike earthquakes, people can see them coming. And yet here in the waning days of the Holocene, humans’ relationship to these once mostly benevolent specters has changed. Fires move faster and burn hotter, and in 2018 they resulted in the deadliest blaze California had ever seen. According to data analytics firm Verisk, 4.5 million homes in the United States are at high or extreme risk of wildfire.
